On Sunday, May 26, 2024, on duty crews Truck 25, Ambulance 25, Engine 26, and Chief 25 were dispatched to 10400 block of Preston Street for the report of a boat fire.
Upon arrival, crews reported smoke and fire emitting from a boat on a trailer parked in back yard of residence. Engine 26 deployed a fire hose through attached garage of the home for quickest access to fire area. Upon entering the back yard, a boat was found fully engulfed in flames. Fire had communicated to both the fence and shed in the back yard.
With assistance from Truck 25, crews initially extinguished the fire which later flared up again due to the presence of Lithium-Ion Marine batteries. Because of the presence of these batteries, this was a longer duration event. Fire crews had to remove the batteries and keep them submerged in water to prevent re-ignition. Ambulance 25 arrived for EMS standby and assist engine and truck companies with hose advancement and clean up.
Broadview and Hillside Fire Department’s were on scene for assistance. All department personnel on scene worked safely and efficiently in the extinguishment of the fire. Chief 25 will be handling the investigation. No injuries reported.
